Declan O’Brien is an innovator in low budget and independent filmmaking who has created a wide variety of quality entertainment as a director, writer, producer and executive. Holding both US and Irish citizenship, he has directed, developed and produced several motion pictures, ranging from studio features to independent films to animation, as well as television series, television movies and international co-productions in several countries.

Mr. O’Brien has most recently taken on another horror franchise for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. He wrote and directed Joy Ride 3, the third installment of the horror franchise written and produced by J.J. Abrams. The film debuted in June 2014. Prior to that in 2013 Mr. O’Brien wrote and directed Wrong Turn 5 for Fox continuing on his very profitable run at expanding the Wrong Turn movies into one of the longest running franchises in cinema history.

Mr. O’Brien wrote and directed Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, the fourth installment of the 20th Century Fox horror franchise, which had its world premiere at ScreamFest 2011 at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. This marked his return to the franchise after successfully helming Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead, which sold over 350,000 units, making it one of the most profitable sequels in Fox Home Video history.

In the action arena, Mr. O’Brien wrote The Marine 3: Home Front for WWE and 20th Century Fox which debuted in 2012 as well as Hijacked which starred Vinnie Jones, Randy Couture and Dominic Purcell.

In 2010, Mr. O’Brien reteamed with his mentor, legendary film icon and Academy Award recipient for Lifetime Achievement Roger Corman for one of his most buzzed about titles in years – Sharktopus. An intentionally tongue-in-cheek throwback to the B-movies Roger produced in the 60’s and 70’s, Sharktopus became an Internet and media sensation. The trailer alone has reached over 12 million views on YouTube and when the film debuted in September of 2010, it quickly became one of the highest rated Syfy original films in the network’s history.

On the writing front, Mr. O’Brien is developing a new superhero feature film with legendary comic book creator Stan Lee as an independent theatrical release. He worked with Mr. Lee before on the 2006 title, Stan Lee’s The Harpy that also premiered on Syfy. Other Syfy projects that Declan wrote include The Snake King, The Island and Savage Planet.

Prior to his directing career, Mr. O’Brien served as President of Utopia Pictures & Television in partnership with director/producer Dale Rosenbloom. Utopia’s produced credits include Shiloh, Eight Days A Week and Shiloh Season. Additionally, he executive produced the independent feature Creature Unknown. Prior to that, he served as SVP of development and production for Team Entertainment Group, where he supervised television movies, mini-series and dramatic series. Here, Declan developed and executive produced the Emmy-nominated Jack London’s Call of the Wild, Animal Planet’s first drama series. He also supervised the production of Total Recall 2070 for Showtime based on the blockbuster film.

Prior to Team, Mr. O’Brien served as a development executive at Touchstone Pictures for four years where he worked on Phenomenon starring John Travolta, The Ref starring Kevin Spacey and Jefferson in Paris starring Nick Nolte. After that, Mr. O’Brien moved over to Disney-based Goldenring Productions where he oversaw development.

Mr. O’Brien received his B.A. degree in communications from Cal Poly Pomona and is a member of the DGA, WGA, and The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
